Patient Education Guide to Neural Flossing Exercises

Healthy nerves should move freely within the spine to ensure proper blood supply, fluid exchange & nutrition. Pain is often felt when the nerves are restricted, irritated & swollen. This irritation & swelling occur when they are compressed by a bulging disc or an osteophyte. Restriction can also caused by the presence of scar tissue.

The medical procedure performed by doctor is just one step towards pain relief. Physical therapy such as routine stretching & exercise is the next crucial component to ensureimproved & lasting recovery.

The following 3 simple exercises are designed to complement the clinical procedure. They help to regain & maintain the movement of the nerves in & out of the spinal canal. This type of the exercise-induced nerve root movement is referred to as "neural flossing".

It is important to perform individual exercise or stretch with increase duration fron 10 to 20 seconds. The exercises should be carried out twice daily with each session last no longer than 3 to 5 minutes. For chronic pain suferrers, these exercises shoud be continued indefinately to prevent the restriction of affected nerve roots which will result in pain recurrence.

These 3 exercises should be carried out in fully flat, supine position without pillow.
